The Commandos series has taken years to arrive on the Mac, but it’s been well worth the wait. Mind you, it might take you a few more years to actually complete the games, because they really are extremely challenging. The Commandos Battle Pack actually contains two complete games – Commandos 2: Men of Courage and its sequel, Commandos 3: Destination Berlin (as far as we can tell, Commandos 1 was never released on the Mac). They’re both strategy games in which you lead a team of commandos into battle during World War II. There are ten missions in Commandos 2 and a dozen in Commandos 3, and they take you all over Europe as you tackle challenges that vary from freeing captured soldiers to sabotaging enemy bases. Games like Medal Of Honour cover similar territory, but where Medal Of Honour is very much a shoot-‘em-up action game, the Commandos games concentrate more on strategy. You’ll often find that sneaking past enemies or creating a carefully timed diversion is a better way of achieving your goal than just going in with all guns blazing. The graphics aren’t particularly dazzling, but these games rely on strategy rather than eye candy. Feral Interactive has released a demo version of Commandos Battle Pack -- their forthcoming Mac conversion of Pyro's popular squad-based action strategy games. Challenging gameplay Each of your fellow commandos has their own individual skills, so the secret of success lies in learning how to use those skills to best effect. If you need to sneak onto a submarine you’ll want to send in James Blackwood, the diving expert. Other members of your team have skills such as lock-picking, or linguistics, which allows them to masquerade as enemy officers. Both games are absorbing and challenging, and the urge to keep trying until you manage to complete a mission will keep you playing for hours on end. However, you do need to put in a fair amount of effort before you can really get to grips with these games.
